Proviene como derivación de "maje" que posiblemente tenga su origen en "majo" o "maja" de españa. En Costa Rica lo usamos para llamar a cualquiera (mujer o hombre entre mujeres y hombres) se utiliza indistintamente "mae": "Esa mae", "Ese mae", "ay mae!!" (= ay hombre!, ay mujer!). En otros contextos coloquiales, también tiene una connotación de "tonto": "No te hagás el maje" (no te hagas el tonto), aunque también suele decirce "qué mae más tonto!"
Ejemplo : "Qué? mae? como estás?
Esa mae si me cae bien!
Hacéte el maje!!"
