Se le denomina así a una persona netamente amerindia, también al mestizo, y al tener el Perú un alto porcentaje de amerindios y mestizos, cholo es sinónimo del habitante promedio o común del Perú.
También se utiliza para definir un acto sin gracia ni gusto, originado por algunos "cholos" que no tuvieron la oportunidad de ser educados, se puede hacer un acto "cholo" indistintamente de la raza. La palabra cholo/a usado despectivamente, es superficial.

Uso en término coloquial para designar a una persona mestiza, indígena con blanco, pero en forma despreciativa. también se le llama así a un indígena que viste a la usanza urbana, o que quiere imitar a un costeño. Usualmente los indígenas se encuentran en la sierra, conformando el grueso de la población.
Dependiendo quien lo use puede resultar una alusión a "ella" o una designación despreciativa.
